Dinesh Pant Retires as LIC Managing Director; Government Approves Premature Exit

The Central Government has approved the early termination of the Dinesh Pant as the Managing Director of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) post after his voluntary retirement. The notification was made by the Department of Financial Services (DFS) in the Ministry of Finance on September 24th 2026, and the decision came into force from the date of the notification itself. This marks the end of the term of Pant as the MD of LIC before his superannuation in May 2027.

Dinesh Pant’s Retirement from LIC

As per DFS Notification, the Central Government had given the approval for the “premature termination of appointment” of Dinesh Pant, who had retired voluntarily as the Managing Director of LIC.

The notification was made under the provisions of Life Insurance Corporation of India (Staff) Rules, 1960 and LIC Managing Directors (Revision of Certain Terms and Conditions of Service) Rules, 1988. The date of effect of the order is given as September 24th 2026.

Subsequently, LIC informed that Dinesh Pant has been retired from the service of the Corporation on account of his voluntary retirement and has ceased to hold office of Managing Director & Key Managerial Personnel (KMP) since close of business on September 24.

Term of Office of Mr. Dinesh Pant as Managing Director of LIC

Dinesh Pant was appointed as the Managing Director of LIC in May 2025. He took charge on June 1, 2025.

According to his first appointment, his term would have continued till May 31, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier. In effect, his voluntary retirement has put an end to his term before the date originally specified for him.

Prior to his appointment as the Managing Director of LIC, Mr. Pant has been acting as the Appointed Actuary and Executive Director (Actuarial) of LIC.

Appointment of Dinesh Pant to IRDAI

The above retirement from the LIC is following the appointment of Pant by the government to the office of Whole-Time Member (Actuary) at the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) in June 2026.

Pant was appointed on June 15, 2026, for a period of five years or until reaching 65 years of age, whichever is earlier.

This appointment makes Pant work in a regulatory capacity after a long stint in the LIC, especially the actuarial department.
