Which District of Madhya Pradesh has the Lowest Literacy Rate?

Madhya Pradesh, located in central India, is known for its diverse culture, rich history, and varied landscapes. However, the state also faces challenges in education, with certain districts showing low literacy rates. One such district is Alirajpur, which has the lowest literacy rate in the state. This article explores the reasons behind this low literacy rate and the efforts being made to improve it.

An Overview of Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh, located in central India, is rich in history, culture, and natural resources. Bhopal is its capital. Once India’s largest state, it was divided in 2000 to form Chhattisgarh. Madhya Pradesh shares borders with five states and is known for its vast forest cover and mineral wealth, including diamonds and copper. The state is a prominent tourist destination, home to sites like Khajuraho, Sanchi Stupa, and the globally famous Simhastha Kumbh Mela in Ujjain.

Administrative Divisions of Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh is administratively divided into 55 districts, which are further organized into 428 tehsils or subdistricts. These districts are grouped into 10 divisions: Bhopal, Chambal, Gwalior, Indore, Jabalpur, Narmadapuram, Rewa, Sagar, Shahdol, and Ujjain. This structure helps in effective governance and administration across the state’s diverse regions.

Literacy Rate of Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh has a literacy rate of 69.32%, which is below the national average of 73%. Male literacy stands at 78.73%, while female literacy is significantly lower at 59.24%. This gap highlights the need for focused educational efforts, particularly to improve literacy among women in the state.

District of Madhya Pradesh with the Lowest Literacy Rate

Alirajpur, a district in Madhya Pradesh, has the lowest literacy rate in the state, with only 36.10% of its population being literate. The district is home to approximately 728,999 people, with 209,754 literate individuals. The low literacy rate is a significant challenge, particularly in rural and tribal areas, where access to education is limited and socio-economic factors further hinder educational progress.
