Known for its matrilineal culture, Meghalaya is also referred to as the “Scotland of the East.”
Meghalaya is divided into 12 districts, with Shillong as both its capital and largest city. These districts are spread across the state’s picturesque landscapes, each contributing to Meghalaya’s rich cultural and natural diversity.
Meghalaya’s literacy rate has improved significantly, reaching 74.43% according to the latest census. Male literacy in the state is slightly higher at 75.95%, while female literacy stands at 72.89%. This upward trend reflects ongoing efforts to enhance education across the state, though challenges remain in achieving gender parity in literacy.
