Sikkim, a small state in northeastern India, is bordered by China, Bhutan, Nepal, and West Bengal. Known for its stunning biodiversity and location in the Eastern Himalayas, Sikkim is home to Kangchenjunga, India’s highest peak. The state’s capital is Gangtok, and it boasts the Khangchendzonga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sikkim is also the least populous and second-smallest state in India.
Sikkim is divided into six districts, with Gangtok serving as both the capital and the largest city. These districts are East Sikkim, West Sikkim, North Sikkim, South Sikkim, Pakyong, and Soreng. Each district has its own unique geography and cultural significance within the state.
Sikkim has a literacy rate of 81.42% according to the latest census. Male literacy is higher at 86.55%, while female literacy stands at 75.61%. This reflects the state’s ongoing efforts to improve education, though a gap between male and female literacy still exists.
West Sikkim, with a population of 136,435, has the lowest literacy rate among the districts of Sikkim, standing at 77.39%. Out of this population, 93,432 individuals are literate. Despite its cultural richness and natural beauty, West Sikkim faces educational challenges, making it a priority area for ongoing literacy improvement efforts in the state.
North Sikkim, with a population of 43,709, has the second-lowest literacy rate in the state, at 78.01%. Of this population, 30,450 individuals are literate. Despite its stunning landscapes and strategic importance, North Sikkim faces challenges in education access, contributing to its relatively lower literacy rate compared to other districts in Sikkim.
