DRDO Celebrates 68th Foundation Day 2026: Aatmanirbhar Bharat, Cyber, Space & AI Leadership
On January 1, 2026, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), functioning under the Ministry of Defence (MoD), celebrated its 68th Foundation Day at DRDO Headquarters in New Delhi. The celebration marked nearly seven decades of extraordinary contributions to India’s defence and security infrastructure. Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Minister of State Sanjay Seth, and Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Chairman of DRDO and Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D, graced the occasion with their presence, underscoring the national significance of DRDO’s achievements and future trajectory in advancing Aatmanirbhar Bharat—India’s self-reliant defence ecosystem.
DRDO has been reaffirmed as a pivotal force in Aatmanirbhar Bharat, India’s self-reliance movement in defence manufacturing. The organization continues to drive India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem with a strategic future focus on three critical domains: Cyber, Space, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). This forward-looking vision positions India to address emerging security challenges while reducing dependence on foreign defence technologies.
The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) and Strategic Policy Board (SPB) accorded 22 Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) approvals collectively worth approximately Rs.1.30 lakh crore (Rs.130,000 crore). These approvals facilitate Indian industry in the production of critical defence systems, enabling private sector and Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) to develop and manufacture indigenous defence technologies.
DRDO signed 11 defence contracts worth Rs.26,000 crore with production partners, expanding its operational footprint significantly. Additionally, multiple DRDO-developed systems have been inducted into Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), Police Forces, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), extending DRDO’s operational reach beyond traditional Indian Armed Forces applications.
DRDO has completed or is nearing completion of User Evaluation Trials (UETs) for critical systems including Pralay, Akash Next Generation (Akash NG), Guided Pinaka, Man Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM), Advanced Lightweight Torpedo (ALWT), Battlefield Observation Surveillance System (BOSS), Specialised Demolition Robot (SDR), and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) water systems.
Developmental Trials are actively underway for the Indian Light Tank, Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS), New Air-to-Surface Missile-Short Range (NASM-SR), Rudram-2, Gaurav Glide Bomb, advanced radars, and Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) life support systems.
DRDO signed 245 Licensing Agreements for Transfer of Technology (LAToT) in 2025 alone, bringing the cumulative total to 2,201. This demonstrates DRDO’s commitment to democratizing defence technology and enabling Indian industry to develop indigenous capabilities.
13 new Defence Corridor Production/Production Agency (DcPP/PA) partnerships were added in 2025, increasing the total to 145. Over 4,000 industry tests were conducted for private sector organizations and Defence PSUs, fostering robust innovation ecosystems.
15 Industry–Academia Centres of Excellence (CoE) are operational, with 66 new projects sanctioned in 2025, valued at Rs.228 crore, bridging academic research with industrial applications.
DRDO was established on January 1, 1958, through the amalgamation of the Technical Development Establishment, the Directorate of Technical Development and Production of the Indian Ordnance Factories, and the Defence Science Organisation. Since its inception, DRDO has evolved from an initial network of 10 laboratories to 52 laboratories, becoming a global leader in defence research and technology development.
