ECI Appoints Nitu Chandra and Kranti Prakash Jha as SVEEP Icons for Bihar
In a significant move aimed at boosting electoral awareness, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has appointed renowned actors Nitu Chandra and Kranti Prakash Jha as SVEEP icons for Bihar. With the state gearing up for its upcoming Assembly elections, the inclusion of public figures with mass appeal is part of a broader strategy to enhance voter literacy and participation through creative outreach methods. The initiative is part of the ECI’s flagship voter awareness campaign — SVEEP (Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation) — which is designed to foster an informed and responsible electorate.
The SVEEP programme was launched by the Election Commission of India to address gaps in voter awareness and ensure that every eligible citizen understands the significance of their vote. Over the years, SVEEP has evolved into a multi-pronged educational campaign that uses multimedia platforms, cultural tools, and public figures to spread awareness about the democratic process. The campaign is especially tailored to target low-turnout areas and voter apathy across different demographic and regional profiles.
Celebrities often have a wide fan base and the ability to influence public opinion, especially among young voters and first-time electors. By appointing Nitu Chandra and Kranti Prakash Jha as SVEEP icons, the ECI aims to tap into their popularity and regional roots in Patna and Bhagalpur respectively, to deliver powerful messages on electoral participation. Earlier, folk singer Maithili Thakur was appointed in 2023 for similar objectives, showing the Commission’s consistent use of influential local figures in its outreach.
The primary goal behind appointing these actors as Bihar SVEEP icons is to,
Nitu Chandra, a veteran actress from Patna, is known for her work across multiple Indian languages and Hollywood productions. Beyond acting, she is also a martial artist, classical dancer, and sportsperson, making her a multi-faceted influencer.
Kranti Prakash Jha, hailing from Bhagalpur, has starred in several Bollywood films such as Batla House, MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, and Samrat Prithviraj. His rural connect and cinematic presence are expected to resonate well with Bihar’s diverse electorate.
