European Countries Recognize Palestine, Israel Recalls Envoys

Ireland, Norway, and Spain have announced their formal recognition of Palestine as a state, emphasizing the importance of a two-state solution for peace and stability in the region. Israel, in response, has recalled its ambassadors to Ireland and Norway, viewing the recognition as a threat to its sovereignty and security.

Spanish Announcement and Israeli Warning

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez of Spain declared the nation’s intention to recognize Palestine on May 28th, prompting a stern warning from Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz. Katz cautioned that similar actions would be taken against Spain if it proceeds with the recognition.

Statements from Irish and Norwegian Leaders

Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere expressed their nations’ commitments to peace and reconciliation in the Middle East through the recognition of Palestine as a state. Both leaders underscored the importance of a two-state solution for the region’s stability.

The recognition by European Union members Slovenia and Malta, coupled with the impending recognitions by Ireland, Norway, and Spain, reflects a broader international sentiment favoring Palestinian statehood.
