Trilochan Kanungo, a prominent economist and a long-standing member of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) party, has died at the age of 82. Mr. Kanungo was previously the chairman of Cuttack Municipality and served as the chairperson of the state finance commission. He was born on November 24, 1940 in the village of Badamulei in Cuttack district and had been residing in the Sheikh Bazaar area of Cuttack city for the past few years.

In 1999, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Jagatsinghpur Parliamentary constituency. He was renowned for his erudition and had served as the chairperson of Cuttack municipality twice. He was the chairman of the second Odisha Finance Commission. In the 1960s, he was a student leader and had served as the president of Ravenshaw College and Utkal University. Panchanan Kanungo, who is Trilochan’s younger brother, was a former finance minister and joined the Congress party in 2019.
