F-47: U.S. Sixth-Generation Fighter Jet

What Is the F-47?

The Boeing F-47 is the U.S. Air Force’s upcoming sixth-generation air superiority fighter, developed under the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program. It’s designed to replace the F-22 Raptor. Experimental tests began in 2020, and it’s expected to become operational between 2025–2029.

Key Specifications & Capabilities

  • Built by Boeing, awarded under a $20 billion NGAD contract.
  • Combat radius over 1,000 nautical miles, with top speed above Mach 2.
  • Enhanced range (about 70% more than current fighters) and advanced stealth features.
  • Expected procurement of 185+ units.
  • Works with drone wingmen (Collaborative Combat Aircraft – CCA) for manned-unmanned teaming.
  • First crewed sixth-generation fighter designed for high-threat environments.

Strategic Investment & Impact

  • Pentagon allocated over $3.4 billion to the F-47 program in FY 2026.
  • Boeing’s win revives its fighter production business, considered a major “game-changer” in U.S. defense industry.
  • The “47” designation pays tribute to both the P-47 Thunderbolt of WWII and the number of the U.S. President at the time of approval.
