Many people use smartphones every day, but not everyone knows about the operating systems that power them. One of the most popular operating systems in the world is designed to make mobile devices smarter and more user-friendly. It has changed the way people communicate, work and entertain themselves. But who was the main person behind its creation? Let’s explore the story behind this amazing invention.
Andy Rubin is an American computer programmer, entrepreneur and investor. He is best known as the creator of Android, the world’s most popular mobile operating system. Rubin has worked with major technology companies like Apple, Google and Microsoft. He played a big role in shaping the smartphone industry.
Andy Rubin was born on March 13, 1963, in Chappaqua, New York. His father was a psychologist who later started a business related to marketing electronic gadgets. Rubin completed his schooling at Horace Greeley High School and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science from Utica College in 1986.
Rubin started his career as a robotics engineer at Carl Zeiss AG from 1986 to 1989. He then worked as a manufacturing engineer at Apple from 1989 to 1992. At Apple, his love for robots earned him the nickname “Android,” which later became the name of his famous mobile operating system.
In 1999, Rubin co-founded a company called Danger Inc., which created the T-Mobile Sidekick, an early smartphone. After leaving Danger in 2013, he founded Android Inc., a company focused on making an advanced mobile operating system. Google acquired Android Inc. in 2005, and Rubin continued to develop Android under Google.
As Google’s Senior Vice President, Rubin led the development of Android, which became the most widely used smartphone operating system in the world. In 2013, he moved to work on robotics at Google but left the company in 2014.
After leaving Google, Rubin started Playground Global, a company that invested in new technology startups. He also founded Essential Products, a smartphone company, in 2015. However, Essential Products failed to succeed and shut down in 2020.
In 2019, Rubin was induced into the Wireless Hall of Fame for his contributions to mobile technology. Despite controversies, he remains known as the “Father of Android” for his role in creating the operating system that changed the smartphone industry.
