The first-ever T20 International match between India and Pakistan remains one of the most thrilling moments in cricket history. The two arch-rivals faced each other on September 14, 2007, during the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup in South Africa.
The match was special for many reasons. It was MS Dhoni’s first full match as India’s captain in a major ICC tournament. The young Indian side was still finding its rhythm in the shortest format of the game, which was relatively new at the international level.
The contest turned into a nail-biting thriller. After 20 overs each, the match ended in a tie. At that time, Super Overs were not introduced in T20 cricket. Instead, the result was decided by a bowl-out, similar to a penalty shootout in football.
In the bowl-out, each team nominated five bowlers to hit the stumps without a batsman present.
For India, Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh, and Robin Uthappa stepped up and successfully hit the stumps.
On the other hand, Pakistan’s bowlers failed to hit the stumps even once. As a result, India won the bowl-out 3-0.
This dramatic victory boosted India’s confidence in the tournament. The win also became one of the most memorable India–Pakistan clashes in T20 cricket history.
Interestingly, India went on to win the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup, marking the beginning of a new era in Indian cricket under MS Dhoni’s leadership.
