Early Life of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel

Sardar Patel was born on October 31, 1875, in a town called Nadiad in Gujarat. His parents were Jhaverbhai Patel and Ladba Patel. He followed the Vaishnavism faith and took religious teachings from the Pushtimarg sect. He studied hard and went to England at the age of 36 to study law. After becoming a lawyer, he returned to Ahmedabad and started helping people.

Beginning of His Political Career

Sardar Patel was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi. His first political role was in 1917 as Sanitation Commissioner of Ahmedabad. Later, he became Chairman of the Ahmedabad Municipal Committee, where he improved the city’s cleanliness, water supply and planning.

In 1931, he became the President of the Indian National Congress at the Karachi Session, where important decisions about rights and economic policies were taken.

Leadership During Independence

Sardar Patel’s leadership during India’s struggle for independence was marked by his unwavering commitment to nonviolent civil disobedience. He played a crucial role in organizing movements among peasants in places like Kheda, Borsad and Bardoli in Gujarat, advocating for the rights and welfare of the farmers. His dedication and vision earned him the title of “Iron Man of India.”

In this capacity, he had the monumental task of unifying the diverse princely states into the newly formed Indian Union. Sardar Vallabhabhai Patel passed away on December 15, 1950. He is still remembered as one of the greatest leaders of India. In 2018, the Statue of Unity – the tallest statue in the world- was made in his honor. His life and work continue to inspire people who want to serve the nation.
