Abhinav Bindra is a celebrated Indian sport shooter who has made significant contributions both on and off the field. His achievements include Olympic glory, numerous international medals, and impactful work in sports science and policy.
Abhinav Bindra was born on September 28, 1982, in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, into a Punjabi Sikh Khatri family. He received his early education at the Doon School in Dehradun and St. Stephen’s School in Chandigarh. Pursuing higher education, Bindra studied business administration at the University of Colorado Boulder. His quest for top-notch training facilities took him to Germany, where he trained under coach Gaby Buhlmann.
Bindra’s career began with notable performances at a young age. At 15, he was the youngest participant in the 1998 Commonwealth Games. He also competed as the youngest Indian in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, where he placed 11th in the 10-meter air rifle event. His breakthrough came in 2001 when he won a bronze medal at the Munich World Cup and set a new junior world record.
Bindra’s success continued with gold medals at the 2002 Commonwealth Games and the 2006 ISSF World Shooting Championships. The pinnacle of his career was winning the Olympic gold medal in the 10-meter air rifle event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He followed this with more gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Despite a back injury that disrupted his preparation for the 2008 Olympics, Bindra made a remarkable comeback. He also had strong showings at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, where he finished fourth.

This victory marked a historic achievement, making him the first Indian to win an individual Olympic gold medal. Bindra’s exceptional performance, with a total score of 700.5, secured his place in Olympic history.
Post-retirement, Bindra transitioned into business and sports development. He is the CEO of Abhinav Futuristics Private Limited, which integrates science and technology into sports and healthcare. His organization, ABTP, provides advanced physical medicine and rehabilitation services. The Abhinav Bindra Foundation, a non-profit entity, supports athletes with access to cutting-edge sports technology and high-performance training. Bindra also launched the Abhinav Bindra Sports Medicine and Research Institute in Bhubaneswar in 2020, aimed at enhancing sports medicine and healthcare in India.
Bindra’s influence extends to sports policy. He has been a member of the TOP Scheme for athlete development in India, served as Chair of the ISSF Athlete Committee, and is currently a member of the IOC Athletes’ Commission. His work includes advocating for mental health, financial stability, and entrepreneurship for athletes.
