Neera Arya was a brave freedom fighter and and the first woman spy of the Azad Hind Fauj, led by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Born in Uttar Pradesh, she showed great love for the country from a young age. Her life was full of courage, sacrifice and struggle. Neera’s story is an inspiration for all and reminds us of the important role women played in India’s freedom movement.
Neera Arya was born on 5 March 1902 in Khekra Nagar, located in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh. Her father, Seth Chhajjumal, was a rich businessman. He made sure that Neera received a good education in Kolkata. From a young age, Neera was filled with love for her country and wanted to help in India’s freedom struggle.
Neera Arya joined the Azad Hind Fauj (Indian National Army), started by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. She became a part of the Rani Jhansi Regiment, which was a group of brave women fighters. Neera was full of courage and wanted to do something big for her country.
Neera was married to Srikant Jai Ranjan Das, a British Army Officer and CID Inspector. But their ideas were very different. While Neera loved her country and fought for freedom, her husband supported the British rule.
One day, Srikant followed Neera when she went to meet Netaji. He tried to shoot at Bose’s driver, putting Netaji’s life in danger. To save Netaji, Neera made a huge sacrifice – she killed her own husband. This was a turning point in her life and showed her strong commitment to India.
After this incident, the British arrested Neera Arya. She was sent to the Andaman and Nicobar Jail, which was known for its harsh and painful punishments. Even in such terrible conditions, Neera never gave up her loyalty to India.
The British officers promised her freedom if she gave them information about Netaji and others. But Neera stayed silent. She suffered greatly, but she did not betray her fellow freedom fighters.
Because of her courage and loyalty. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose gave her the honor of being the first woman spy of the Azad Hind Fauj. Neera Arya played a very important role in spying and gathering information that helped the army. She showed that even women could be brave warriors and spies.
After India got independence, Neera Arya lived a quiet life, away from the public. Sadly, she did not get much recognition for her work. She passed away on 26 July 1998 in Osmania Hospital, near Charminar, Hyderabad.
Neera Arya’s story is one of bravery, sacrifice and love for the country. As the first female spy of the Azad Hind Fauj, she made history. She showed the world that women can be just as strong and fearless as men.
Today, her name is still not very well known, but she remains a true hero of India’s freedom struggle. Her life is an inspiration for all who dream of serving the nation.
