NASA, the world-renowned space agency, has seen many trailblazing leaders since its inception. Among them, a historic milestone was achieved when a woman took on the role of Acting Administrator for the first time, showcasing the progress toward gender equality in space exploration leadership.
Janet E. Petro made history as the first woman to serve as NASA’s Acting Administrator and is the 11th director of the John F. Kennedy Space Center (KSC). Her inspiring journey—from her early life to leading one of NASA’s most important centers—reflects her hard work, leadership, and outstanding accomplishments in the field of space exploration.
Janet Petro was born in Michigan, but her family moved to Florida when her father began working with NASA on the Mercury and Gemini Programs. She grew up near the Kennedy Space Center, attending schools like Surfside Elementary, DeLaura Middle, and Satellite High School. In 1981, she graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, earning a degree in engineering. Notably, she was part of only the second class at West Point that included women. Later, she earned a Master’s degree in business administration from Boston University.
After graduating from West Point, Janet Petro became a U.S. Army Officer. She worked in the Army’s Aviation Branch, where she piloted helicopters and managed troop assignments in Germany. After leaving the Army, she took on roles in private aerospace companies. She worked with Science Applications International Corporation and McDonnell Douglas Aerospace Corporation, where she specialized in mechanical engineering and payload operations.
Janet Petro joined NASA and served as Deputy Director at the Kennedy Space Center. She played a key role in transforming the center into a “multi-user spaceport.” This change allowed both NASA and private companies to use the facility. During her time as Deputy Director, she also worked at NASA’s Washington, D.C., headquarters, managing important projects and helping oversee the work of thousands of employees. She was the first woman to hold the deputy director position at KSC.
In 2025, Janet Petro became NASA’s acting Administrator being appointed by President Donald Trump. She also served as KSC Director, a position she had held since 2021. In these roles, she helped shape NASA’s future and continued its legacy as space exploration.
Janet Petro has received several honors for her outstanding contributions. She was inducted into the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame in 2018. In 2019, she won the prestigious Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medal for Management Excellence. She has also earned the President’s Distinguished Executive Award and the Silver Snoopy Award, given by astronauts for exceptional performance.
