Former India All-Rounder Vijay Shankar Retires from Domestic Cricket and IPL
Former India and Tamil Nadu all rounder Vijay Shankar has announced his retirement from domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL). He was part of the multiple IPL franchises and also won the trophy with those teams. With this he will eligible to participate in the overseas franchise cricket league.
Vijay Shankar has represented the India in 21 white-ball matches between 2018 and 2019.
He has played the 12 One Day Internationals (ODIs), scored 223 runs at an average of 31.85.
In the 9 T20 Internationals, he scored around 101 runs at a strike rate of 138.35.
Vijay Shankar played most of his domestic cricket for the state of Tamil Nadu, where he became the important all-round performer.
He also captained the Tamil Nadu to victories in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Deodhar Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Before his retirement, he moved to Tripura for the 2025-26 domestic season.
He ended his domestic career impressively with the unbeaten 151 against Gujarat in the Ranji Trophy, earning the Player of the Match award.
In the first-class cricket, Vijay Shankar scored 4,253 runs at an average of 46.73.
In List A cricket, he also scored around the 2,790 runs, while in T20 cricket he made 2,583 runs.
Across the all formats of the game he also picked up 154 wickets and proved himself as valuable genuine all-rounder.
Vijay Shankar has played 78 IPL matches from 2014 to 2025.
He represented teams like the Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Titans.
He went unsold in the 2026’s IPL auction and with this it marked end of his IPL career.
He also became Champion with the Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Vijay Shankar gained the major attention during the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup selection.
He was chosen over the Ambati Rayudu because selectors believed that he offered batting, bowling and fielding value, famously calling him a ‘3D player.’
During the World Cup, he also picked up two important wickets against Pakistan which also includes the first ball wicket in the World Cup delivery.
In his retirement message, he signed off by calling himself as “Your 3D cricketer.”
