Former Indian Hockey Star Manuel Frederick Dies at 78

Former Indian hockey goalkeeper Manuel Frederick, India’s first Olympic medallist from Kerala, passed away at the age of 78. A key member of the bronze medal-winning Indian team at the 1972 Munich Olympics, Frederick was celebrated for his fearless saves and his immense contribution to Indian hockey.

Who was Manuel Frederick?

Born in Burnassery, Kannur, in 1947, Frederick made history as the first Keralite to win an Olympic medal. His journey began in the Indian Army’s school team in Bengaluru, where his natural talent as a goalkeeper quickly stood out.

Over the years, he played for several top domestic teams, including ASC, HAL (Karnataka), Services, Uttar Pradesh, and the iconic Mohun Bagan Club in Kolkata. His rise from humble beginnings to international fame became an inspiration for many young athletes from Kerala — a state not traditionally known for hockey.

Olympic Glory and International Career

Frederick joined the Indian national team in 1971 and had an impressive seven-year international career. His most memorable moment came at the 1972 Munich Olympics, where India secured the bronze medal with his exceptional goalkeeping.

He also represented India in two Hockey World Cups — the 1973 edition in the Netherlands, where India won silver, and the 1978 World Cup in Argentina. His consistent performances and leadership made him one of India’s most respected players of the decade.

Earned the Nickname ‘Tiger’

Frederick earned the nickname “Tiger” for his fearless goalkeeping and lightning-fast reflexes. Known for his calmness under pressure, he was especially skilled at defending penalty strokes, often turning the tide of crucial matches with his saves.

His teammates admired his discipline, while opponents respected his courage and sharp instincts. Even after retirement, Frederick remained a role model for aspiring hockey players, particularly those from Kerala and other non-traditional hockey regions.

Recognitions and Awards

In recognition of his long and illustrious career, Manuel Frederick was honoured with the Dhyan Chand Award for Lifetime Achievement by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in 2019. This prestigious award reflected his decades of dedication to the sport and his invaluable contribution to Indian hockey.

Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey and Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh paid heartfelt tributes, calling him “one of India’s finest goalkeepers and a true inspiration for future generations.”

Legacy of Manuel Frederick

Manuel Frederick’s passing marks the end of an era for Indian hockey. From defending goals on the Olympic field to inspiring countless youngsters, his journey stands as a symbol of courage, perseverance, and pride for Kerala and the nation.
