Background

Velikakathu Sankaran Achuthanandan, born in 1923 in Alappuzha, Kerala, overcame early personal hardships—losing both parents at a young age and starting work as a tailor and coir worker. He entered political life through trade union activities and quickly rose through the ranks of the Communist movement in Kerala.

Political Career and Significance

VS was among the 32 leaders who broke away from the CPI in 1964 to form the CPI(M). Even in his 90s, he actively campaigned for the party and enjoyed strong public support, especially among the youth.

Tenure as Chief Minister (2006–2011)

At 83, VS became Kerala’s Chief Minister, focusing on land reforms, anti-encroachment drives, and transparency in governance. His tenure is remembered for initiatives that protected public lands, promoted farmers’ welfare, and battled corruption. He also played a vital role in environmental protection efforts.

Legacy and Impact

VS Achuthanandan remained a people’s leader throughout his life, respected beyond political lines. His legacy includes fighting for landless peasants, standing firm against corporate encroachments, and promoting ethical politics. His simplicity and dedication made him a revered icon in Kerala’s political history
