Former Odisha Governor Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare Passes Away

The state of Odisha mourns the loss of Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare, the former Governor of the state, who passed away on June 15 at the age of 95.

A Life of Service and Advocacy

Born on December 10, 1928, in Mumbai, Bhandare was a senior Congress leader from Maharashtra. He served as a member of the Rajya Sabha for three terms, having been elected in June 1980, April 1982, and April 1988. During his tenure, he served as the chairman of various parliamentary committees and visited several countries, including the USA, UK, USSR, and Germany.

Bhandare was a humanitarian at heart, advocating for equal rights for the marginalized strata of society. He had an illustrious journey as a lawyer and was designated as a Senior Advocate in the Supreme Court. He served as the President of the Supreme Court Bar Association for two terms, earning respect as a champion of the common man’s causes.

A Respected Gubernatorial Tenure

Bhandare was appointed as the Governor of Odisha on August 21, 2007, succeeding Rameshwar Thakur. He served in this esteemed position until March 9, 2013, when SC Jamir took over.

During his tenure as Governor, Bhandare’s contributions were widely recognized and appreciated by the people of Odisha.
