Former Suriname President Chandrikapersad Santokhi Passes Away at 67

Former Suriname President Chandrikapersad Santokhi passed away on the 30th march at the age of 67 years. With this it is marking the end of the significant political journey of the leader. He Served as the president of Suriname from the 2020 to 2025. Santokhi was known for the his economic reforms and strong global outreach with several countries. The sudden demise of him has drawn the condolences from leaders worldwide also Indian PM Narendra Modi in his grieg message highlighted his contribution for strengthening the India-Suriname relations.

Santokhi’s Political Journey and Legacy

Chandrikapersad Santokhi had the diverse and impactful career and he also starting from the law enforcement to becoming the highest political authority in Suriname.

As before assuming the office as president of the country he had served as the police commissioner and as the justice minister.

For his contributions he earned the nickname ‘Sheriff’ for his strict approach to law and order enforcement.

After some years he became the leader of the Progressive Reform Party and rose to power in the 2020 after the defeating former president Desi Bouterse.

After leaving the office in 2025 he continued serving as the Member of Parliament and it shows his continuous commitment for the welfare of people,.

During his presidency tenure Santokhi implemented the various economic reforms which are also supported by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to stabilize economy of the Suriname.

These reforms included the,

  • Policy changes which can stabilise inflation

His leadership stood out for the strengthening ties between Suriname and India.

His Indian roots have also played the significant role in to shaping this relationship.

PM Narendra Modi expressed the deep grief on his passing and called his death as loss not just for Suriname but also for the Indian Diaspora globally.
