Former Vice-Chairman of UGC H. Devaraj dies aged 71

The academic community mourns the loss of H. Devaraj, former Vice-Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), who passed away at the age of 71. His death marks the end of a remarkable career that spanned decades and left an indelible mark on India’s higher education landscape.

Early Life and Education

Roots in the Nilgiris

H. Devaraj hailed from the Nilgiris, a picturesque district in Tamil Nadu known for its rolling hills and tea plantations. This serene environment likely played a role in shaping his early interest in the sciences, particularly in the field of chemistry.

Academic Journey

Devaraj’s pursuit of knowledge began with a B.Sc in Chemistry from the University of Madras. His passion for scientific inquiry led him to further his studies, earning both an M.Sc and PhD in Biochemistry from the same prestigious institution. These degrees laid the foundation for a career that would bridge multiple scientific disciplines.

Post-Doctoral Research and Specializations

Expanding Horizons

Not content with his already impressive academic achievements, Devaraj ventured into specialized fields of study through post-doctoral research:

  1. In 1985, he completed post-doctoral research in plant biotechnology at the renowned Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. This experience broadened his understanding of how biochemistry principles apply to plant systems.
  2. In 1991, he furthered his expertise with another post-doctoral stint, this time focusing on glycobiology at Penn State University in the United States. This research delved into the complex world of carbohydrates in biological systems, adding another layer to his multifaceted scientific knowledge.

Recognition of Expertise

The University of Madras, recognizing Devaraj’s significant contributions to science, honored him with a D.Sc degree in Stem Cell Biology in 2007. This prestigious degree acknowledged his advanced research and expertise in a cutting-edge field of biology.

Career at the University of Madras

Return and Ascension

Upon returning from his studies in the United States, Devaraj joined the faculty at the University of Madras. His exceptional skills and knowledge quickly propelled him through the ranks, leading to various administrative posts within the university.

Continued Research and Mentorship

Even as he took on administrative responsibilities, Devaraj remained committed to research and education. Since 2016, he held the position of UGC-BSR Faculty Fellow at the University’s Department of Zoology, where he continued to contribute to scientific advancement and mentor the next generation of researchers.

Leadership at the National Level

UGC Vice-Chairmanship

Devaraj’s expertise and leadership skills were recognized at the national level when he was appointed Vice-Chairman of the UGC from 2013 to 2016. In this role, he played a crucial part in shaping higher education policies and standards across India.

Shaping Universities Nationwide

His influence extended beyond his term at the UGC. Devaraj was frequently called upon to serve on Vice-Chancellor search panels for universities throughout India.
