The Paralympic Games are a major international sports event where athletes with disabilities compete at the highest level. These games take place every four years, just like the Olympics and showcase incredible talent, strength and determination. They provide opportunities for athletes with physical, visual or intellectual impairments. But have you ever wondered who started the Paralympic Games and how they began? Let’s find out.
The Paralympic Games were started by Sir Ludwig Guttmann, a German-British doctor. Born on July 3, 1899, in Germany, he specialized in treating brain and nerve disorders. In 1939, he fled Nazi Germany and settled in England, where he continued his medical work and later founded the Paralympic movement.
Guttmann was passionate about helping people with spinal cord injuries, especially soldiers who were injured during World War II. He believed that sports could help them recover and lead a better life.
In 1948, Sir Ludwig Guttmann organized a sports event for injured war veterans at Stroke Mandeville Hospital in England. This event was called the Stroke Mandeville Games. It took place on the same day as the London Olympics and included wheelchair sports like archery.
As the years passed, more countries joined the event. In 1960, the first official Paralympic Games were held in Rome, Italy. Athletes from 23 countries participated and the event became a global success.
Sir Ludwig Guttmann passed away on March 18, 1980, but his contributions to the Paralympics are still remembered today. The Paralympic Games have now become a major international sports event, held every four years, just like the Olympics. Athletes with disabilities from all over the world participate, proving that disability is not a limitation.
