The first batch of the astronauts for Gaganyaan Program was just limited to Indian Air Force test pilot which are chosen through the rigorous process which involves the medical, psychological and operational evaluations.
Now the ISRO is broadening the its approach by the considering civilian candidates from the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) backgrounds.
This will be aligns India with global space agencies which includes the scientists, engineers and specialists in their astronaut corps.
The proposed second batch is expected to include around 10 candidates with the mix of the military pilots and civilian experts.
The inclusion of these civilians marks the transition toward the more diverse and multidisciplinary astronaut team. While the military pilots bring the operational expertise and flight experience and the civilian specialists can contribute in areas like the,
