Government Plans High-Powered Demography Mission to Tackle Illegal Immigration and Strengthen Border Security

Indian central government is preparing to launch the major national initiative called the High-Powered Demography Mission. This mission aimed at to tackle the illegal immigration and strengthening border security. This decision was announced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and it is expected to focus specially on  infiltration from the Bangladesh and Myanmar.

Modi Government Plans High-Powered Demography Mission

The Centre is expected to formally announce the new High-Powered Demography Mission soon.

The initiative has been positioned as the strategic response to illegal immigration and related security concerns.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has revealed the plan while addressing the annual Rustamji Memorial lecture hosted by the Border Security Force (BSF).

According to Amit Shah, this mission will focus on stopping long-running infiltration into India’s border regions.

The initiative appears to combine the border management, state coordination and administrative enforcement.

Why the Government Is Launching This Mission

The illegal immigration has remained a politically and administratively sensitive issue for years.

The government argues that the unchecked infiltration can create security risks.

Officials have also linked the issue to demographic changes in certain border regions.

The main focus has been placed on infiltration concerns from the countries like,

  • Bangladesh
  • Myanmar

Also the border states in eastern and northeastern India are expected to be central to the mission.

Amit Shah’s Key Message

While announcing the initiative, Amit Shah compared the upcoming mission to the government’s anti-Naxal campaign.

He suggested that just as a decades old insurgency challenge was addressed with the determination, infiltration must now be tackled with similar resolve.

He also urged to the BSF to take a leading role.

The message was clear the border security enforcement is expected to intensify.

Which States Will Be Most Affected?

The government has indicated that some of states will be at the centre of this initiative.

These includes the,

  • West Bengal
  • Assam
  • Tripura

These states shares the sensitive international borders and have frequently been part of  the immigration-related political debates.

Smart Border Project Also Announced

Alongside with the demography mission, the government also plans to launch a smart border project next year.

The project aims to strengthen the India’s border security infrastructure.

The focus will be on approximately 6,000 kilometres of border areas with the countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Smart border technology could includes the,

  • Advanced sensors
  • Electronic surveillance
  • Integrated monitoring
  • Real-time tracking systems
  • Automated detection tools

What Is the BSF’s Role?

The Border Security Force (BSF) is the India’s primary force responsible for guarding the international land borders.

Its responsibilities includes the,

  • Border surveillance
  • Preventing illegal crossings
  • Countering smuggling
  • Security coordination

Under the new initiative, its role may become even more central.

The BSF could become the key operational pillar of the mission.
