Under the Sagarmala program, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways has undertaken the development of a National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) in Lothal, Gujarat. This ambitious project, estimated to cost ₹4,500 crore, aims to establish a world-class facility that highlights India’s maritime heritage from ancient to modern times. By adopting an “edutainment approach” utilizing cutting-edge technology, the complex intends to serve as an international tourist destination, spreading awareness about the country’s rich maritime legacy.

Onsite Project Progress Review Meeting Scheduled for July 2, 2023:

An onsite project progress review meeting has been scheduled for July 2, 2023, at Lothal, Gujarat. This meeting will provide an opportunity to assess the advancements made in the development of the NMHC.

  2. World’s Largest Open Aquatic Gallery: A major highlight of the complex will be the world’s largest open aquatic gallery, showcasing diverse marine life and emphasizing the importance of oceanic ecosystems.
  3. India’s Grandest Naval Museum: The complex will house India’s grandest naval museum, presenting the evolution and significance of the country’s naval forces through captivating exhibits and interactive displays.
  4. An International Tourist Destination: With its numerous attractions and immersive experiences, the NMHC aspires to become one of the world’s biggest international tourist destinations, attracting visitors from across the globe.

Boosting Tourism and Economic Development:

The development of the National Maritime Heritage Complex is expected to significantly enhance the tourism potential of the region. By drawing in a large number of visitors, the project will contribute to the economic development of the area.

Unique Features of the Complex:

  1. Lothal Mini Recreation: The complex will feature a Lothal mini recreation, offering visitors a glimpse into the architectural and lifestyle aspects of the Harappan civilization.

  2. Four Theme Parks: The NMHC will include four theme parks: Memorial theme park, Maritime and Navy theme park, Climate theme park, and Adventure and Amusement theme park. These parks will provide entertainment and education on various aspects of maritime history and culture.
  3. Fourteen Galleries Showcasing India’s Maritime Heritage: Fourteen galleries within the complex will span India’s maritime heritage, starting from the Harappan times up to the present day. Each gallery will offer a comprehensive and engaging exploration of different historical periods.
  4. Coastal States Pavilion: A dedicated Coastal States Pavilion will display the diverse maritime heritage of India’s states and union territories, highlighting their unique contributions to the country’s maritime history.
