This airport has been a long-standing dream for the people of North Andhra, and the remaining land acquisition process will be completed as soon as possible, said the minister. The district administration has resolved the issues related to land acquisition Rehabilitation and Resettlement for the Project Displaced Families on priority. The foundation stone ceremony and public meeting by the Chief Minister will be held on the Trumpet Road.
The construction of the Greenfield airport was first proposed by the state government after the bifurcation of the state in 2014. Under the leadership of N Chandrababu Naidu, the former TDP government kickstarted the process of acquiring land for the airport and subsequently allocated an area of 2,700 acres to GMR Group to construct the airport. However, legal hurdles related to land acquisition prevented the project from taking off. The Jagan Mohan Reddy government re-initiated the land acquisition process with a new alignment for the airport on 2,200 acres and finalized tenders for construction under Public-Private Partnership mode by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited.
The district administration has identified 376 Project Displaced Families from four villages, including Rellipeta, Mudasarlapeta, Bollinkalapalem, and Maradapalem in Bhogapuram Mandal. The government paid Rs 9.20 lakh to each of the PDFs and developed necessary amenities such as roads, drainage systems, electrification, community buildings, overhead water tanks, drinking water, parks, Anganwadi centers, and primary schools for Rs 30 crore. The district administration has resolved all legal, land acquisition, Rehabilitation, and Resettlement issues, and is now making preparations for the foundation stone ceremony on May 3.
