GST Collections Rise 14.8% to Nearly ₹2 Trillion in August

As per data released by the Ministry of Finance on September 1. The strong annual growth despite the slowing of collections from July’s ₹2.11 trillion. Import GST collection emerged as the best performing component growing by 29%, followed by domestic GST collection growing 9%. Also, net collections after accounting for the refunds remained robust at ₹1.68 trillion. This set of data gives a critical insight into the revenue collections, economic activities and consumption patterns in the early months of FY27.

Key Numbers for August GST Collection

The gross collection under the GST grew 14.8% when compared to August last year.

The collections, however, were down from the ₹2.11 trillion collected in July 2026. It shows some moderation from the July’s exceptionally high level of collections but still a robust growth on a year-on-year basis.

Growth in Import GST Beats Domestic Collections

Collection of GST on the basis of imports showed exceptionally high growth in August. Collections from imports were up 29% year-on-year at ₹62,604 crore, well above the 9% growth seen in domestic GST collections at ₹1.37 trillion.

The exceptional growth in imports collections is indicative of India’s dependency on overseas sourcing in certain sectors, says EY India tax partner Saurabh Agarwal.

Net GST Collections Grow 8.3%

Taking into account the refund, net GST collections showed 8.3% growth year-on-year to ₹1.68 trillion in August.

However, net collections were marginally below 7% compared to last month. This was due to high growth in refunds.

GST refunds increased 68% year-on-year to ₹31,795 crore. Domestic GST refunds were up close to 73% to ₹18,490 crore, whereas refunds for GST paid on imports increased almost 62% to ₹13,305 crore.

GST Revenue in FY27 Registers High Growth

The aggregate figure for the first five months of FY27 also shows a positive trend. During April-August 2026, gross GST collections grew 11% year-on-year to ₹10.43 trillion.

Net GST collections in the same period grew 9% to ₹8.89 trillion.
