It celebrates the unification of the several princely states into one administrative unit after India got independence. Himachal Day is celebrated every year on April 15th  because on this day in 1948 this region was officially formed as the Chief Commissioner’s Province.

After India got independence around 28 to 30 small princely states which includes the Chamba, Mandi and Sirmaur, were merged to create the single administrative unit.

This step has laid the foundation of modern Himachal Pradesh and bring the scattered hill regions under the one governance system.
