Himalaya Diwas 2026: Glacier Retreat Raises Water Concerns

The Himalaya Diwas is marked annually on September 9th to focus on the significance of the region ecologically, culturally and economically and the necessity of preserving its delicate ecological environment. In 2026, the observance has become more significant because of some scientific reports about the continuing melting of glaciers and lessening of the seasonal snow in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH). The area serves as a big natural reserve of the water of large Asian rivers such as Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra. Therefore, changes in glaciers and snow cover are critical for India’s water security.

Why Is the Himalaya Diwas Celebrated on September 9?

The Himalaya Diwas was first declared in Uttarakhand in 2015 to spread information about Himalaya conservation, sustainable development and involvement of communities into these processes. The day focuses on the environmental problems of the mountain ecosystems like climate change, deforestation, extreme weather conditions, human activities without any planning.

Also, the Himalaya region is vital for water resources, agriculture, biodiversity, hydropower and lives of people downstream.

What Is the Latest Information about Glaciers?

The 2026 survey of ICIMOD indicates that glaciers in the Hindu Kush Himalaya have lost 12 percent of their glacier coverage and 9 percent of their estimated ice mass between 1990 and 2020.

The rate of loss of ice in glaciers has doubled since 2000. The loss of ice in some glaciers amounts to up to 27 metres since 1975.

The loss of ice is faster in small glaciers, especially the ones having an area smaller than 0.5 sq km. About three-quarters of glaciers in the region fall in this category.

The Presence of Snow is Another Critical Factor

Glaciers are not the only part of the water cycle in the Himalayas. Seasonal snow plays its role in storing water and releasing water from melting.

ICIMOD Snow Update 2026 reports that there is 27.8 percent less persistence of snow in the Hindu Kush Himalaya compared to the average, and it is the fourth consecutive year of below-normal snow persistence in the region.

Ten out of the twelve important river basins in the region have reported below-normal snow persistence.

Implications of Glacier Retreat in North India

It should be noted that glacier retreat does not imply the drying out of Himalayan rivers since rivers receive their waters from different sources, namely rain, snow, glacier, and groundwater. However, glacier retreat implies the reduction of ice as a natural water storage of long life span.

According to official statistics of the Indian government, the retreat rate of Hindu Kush Himalayan glaciers is about 14.9 ± 15.1 meters per year. The values of the average retreat rate in three river basins are 12.7 meters per year in the Indus basin, 15.5 meters in the Ganga basin, and 20.2 meters in the Brahmaputra basin.

Implications of Changes in Himalayan Snow and Ice for Farmers and Cities

Changes in snow and ice of Himalayan region can influence irrigation, river flows, hydropower generation, and ecosystems.

In terms of dependence on snow and glacier melts, the Indus basin is more dependent than the Ganga and Brahmaputra basins. Moreover, monsoons play a bigger role in the latter two basins.

Cities should be worried about uncertainty concerning when and how much water would flow into rivers and reservoirs.

Glacier Retreat Might Also Lead to Floods

Besides, climate change poses another threat – glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).

The retreating glaciers mean that the meltwater will form glacial lakes behind unstable natural dams which, if suddenly breached, might release large amounts of water, causing destruction downstream.

India has improved monitoring and early warning systems for dangerous glacial lakes in the Himalayas.

What Should India Do to Protect the Himalayas?

India’s strategy should comprise climate mitigation and adaptation. The key issues to address are,

  • Glacier and snow observation
  • Monitoring of high-risk glacial lakes
  • Enhancing early warning systems
  • Irrigation and water use efficiency
  • Groundwater conservation
  • Climate-resilient agriculture
  • Conservation of forests, wetlands and springs
  • More collaboration between Himalayan nations

Because the major river systems in the Himalayas are transboundary, exchange of scientific information and disaster preparedness coordination is needed too.
