The current count of countries in the world stands at 195. This sum encompasses 193 countries recognized as United Nations member states, along with 2 countries holding non-member observer status: the Holy See and the State of Palestine.

Excluded from the list of 195 countries in the world are:

  • Taiwan – The United Nations views it as represented by the People’s Republic of China.
  • The Cook Islands and Niue – They are  part of various UN specialized agencies and hold “full treaty-making capacity.” However, they do not hold the status of member states or non-member observer states.
  • Dependencies (also known as dependent territories, dependent areas, or dependencies) and Areas of Special Sovereignty (autonomous territories).
  • Other nations acknowledged by the United Nations as lacking self-governance.
