Toll plazas are an important part of India’s road network, helping to fund the construction, expansion, and maintenance of highways and expressways. Every day, lakhs of vehicles pass through these plazas, paying a small fee that supports better connectivity and infrastructure. With India rapidly building new roads and expressways, the number of toll plazas has also grown, making them a familiar sight for travelers across the country.
As of 2025, India has about 1,087 toll plazas on its National Highways (NHs). These are managed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and are officially called user-fee plazas.
Rajasthan has the highest number of toll plazas, with an approximate 156 toll plazas in the state, followed by Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
