How NARIT AI Will Help Gujarat Police Handle Drug Cases Faster and Smarter

Gujarat Police has launched ‘NARIT AI’  (Narcotics Analysis & RAG-based Investigation Tool) and it becoming the first law enforcement agency in India to deploy the such advanced artificial intelligence for the narcotics cases. It was announced on the 10th of April, 2026 and this innovative tool is designed to assist the officers to handling the complex cases under the NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances ) framework.

What is NARIT AI and Why It Matters

This newly launched NARIT AI is a Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) based system and the modern AI approach which relies on the pre trained legal databases instead of traditional open internet sources.

This will ensures the high accuracy and also reduces the chances of the AI-generated errors.

It was developed by the Western Railway Police in Vadodara in collaboration with the Mumbai-based AI startup. This tool will marks the first-of-its-kind innovation in India’s policing system.

The initiative was conceptualized under K.L.N. Rao and it was supported by senior officials including Harsh Sanghvi Dept. CM of State of Gujarat and reflecting the state’s zero-tolerance policy for the narcotics crimes.

How NARIT AI Works in Real Investigations

The functioning of NARIT AI is simple but it is powerful. It transforms the raw case data into the actionable legal insights.

Once an officer uploads copy of FIR into the system, the tool will,

  • Analyses the case in detail
  • Also generates a structured investigation report
  • Identifies the strengths and weaknesses
  • And suggests the legal remedies and next steps

It also provides the investigation guidelines based on court judgments along with the a checklist of evidence required to solve the case.

Legal Backbone: Integration with NDPS Framework

NARIT AI is specifically designed for the cases under the NDPS Act, 1985 which one of the India’s strictest laws which deals with the drug-related offences.

The system is trained by using the,

  • Multiple judgments from High Courts and the Supreme Court
  • Legal provisions from BNS (Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita), BNSS (Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita) and BSA (Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam)
  • Also the Government guidelines and circulars

Addressing the Major Problem: Procedural Lapses in NDPS Cases

One of the biggest and important challenges in NDPS cases has been the procedural errors.

Even the strong evidence can fail in court if the proper procedures are not followed.

NARIT AI will directly addresses this issue by,

  • Highlighting the legal gaps in FIRs
  • Also ensuring the compliance with procedural requirements
  • Also suggesting the corrective actions before filing charges
