Hyderabad, the capital city of Telangana, achieved a significant milestone by securing the ninth position in cleanliness among cities with a population exceeding one lakh in the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023. Additionally, Siddipet, a city in Telangana, proudly clinched the national award for being the cleanest city in south India within the 50,000-1 lakh population category.

Greater Hyderabad’s Five-Star Sanitation Rating

A remarkable achievement for Greater Hyderabad was the attainment of a five-star rating for sanitation. This marks the first instance of a Telangana city, with a population surpassing one lakh, receiving such a prestigious certification. The city also garnered a recertification as a ‘water+’ city, further highlighting its commitment to sustainable water management practices.

Recognition Ceremony in New Delhi

GHMC Commissioner Ronald Rose and district representatives were honored at an award ceremony held in New Delhi on Thursday. The awards were presented by Union Urban Development Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, recognizing the commendable efforts and achievements of the cities in maintaining cleanliness.

Survey Parameters and Components

The assessment for the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023 was conducted between April 2022 and March 2023, encompassing 4,443 local bodies across the country. Greater Hyderabad’s overall score was divided into three key components: 51% for services, 26% for certification, and 23% for people’s voice. This comprehensive evaluation showcases the city’s commitment to various aspects of cleanliness and sanitation.

Transformation from 2015 to 2023

Officials expressed their delight over Greater Hyderabad’s remarkable journey from being ranked 275 in 2015 to securing a position in the top 10 cleanest cities in the recent survey. The positive transformation reflects the concerted efforts and initiatives implemented by the city administration and its residents to improve cleanliness standards.

Siddipet’s Triumph and Recognition

Siddipet’s achievement as the cleanest city in south India in the 50,000-1 lakh population category was celebrated by Siddipet MLA and former minister T. Harish Rao. He extended his congratulations to the residents and officials, emphasizing their crucial role in Siddipet’s success. Harish Rao highlighted Siddipet’s garbage collection, disposal systems, and cleanliness initiatives as models for the entire nation.
