Vishwanath Karthikey Padakanti, a 16-year-old boy from Hyderabad, has made history. He is now the youngest India and the second youngest person in the world to finish the famous 7 Summits challenge. This means he climbed the highest mountain on each of the seven continents – a big dream for mountaineers around the world.
Vishwanath completed his final climb on May 27, when he reached the top of Mount Everest, which is 8,848 meters high. ”Standing on Everest and finishing the 7 Summits is a dream come true,” said Vishwanath. ”This journey tested me in every way – physically, mentally and emotionally.
His passion for climbing started during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. His sister, Vaishnavi, was planning a trek and Vishwanath wanted to join. At just 11 years old, his family was unsure if he could do it. His first trek failed, but it changed him. From that moment, he found his love for the mountains.
Vishwanath trained for five months at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering. His first try at Mount Elbrus in 2021 was also unsuccessful. But he didn’t give up. Over the years, he climbed many big peaks like:
He trained under Bharath and Lt. Romil Barthwal, a former Indian Army officer. They praised him for his discipline, strength and humility. They believe Vishwanath is a great example of what young people can do with the right support and attitude.
His parents and grandparents stood by him. His mother, Laxmi Padakanti, shared how he changed from a lazy child to a responsible and focused young man. Even while climbing mountains, he managed to do well in school – scoring 92% in his Inter First Year.
Not everyone supported their decisions. Some people at embassies questioned why such a young boy was going on difficult trips. Some even asked if he was adopted. But Laxmi didn’t care about their opinions. She believed in her son’s dreams and kept supporting him.
Now that the 7 Summits challenge is complete, Vishwanath is thinking about his future. His mother says he is interested in joining the Indian Army. Whatever path he chooses, his family is ready to support him all the way.
