IAS Chanchal Kumar Takes Charge as I&B Secretary – What It Means for Media

Shri Chanchal Kumar has taken charge as the Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on the 1st of April, 2026.  Mr. Chanchal Kumar is the 1992 batch IAS officer from the Bihar cadre and he will succeed the Sanjay Jaju. Also the Shri Sanjay Jaju has now been appointed as the Secretary of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region.

The appointment of the Chanchal Kumar as Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is the important bureaucratic appointment.

The ministry plays the crucial role to regulating media, broadcasting and digital communication in the country. It is also overseeing the public broadcasters like the Doordarshan and All India Radio.

And it is also responsible for the managing government communication and outreach for the government schemes.

With his diverse experience, Kumar is expected to strengthen policy implementation and digital media governance.

Chanchal Kumar also served as the Secretary in the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) and the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

He also held the several senior positions in the Government of India.

He has also served as Managing Director National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) and gave contribution to the  strategic highway and infrastructure projects.

For the Government of Bihar he has held the several important positions including the Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister an also the Secretary to the Chief Minister.

Additionally he had experienced in the District Magistrate in multiple districts and improved the governance, strengthen the public administration and also the regional challenges.

He holds B.Tech and M.Tech degrees from India’s one of the top institution like IIT Kanpur.

And he also completed the Ph.D. in Economics from the Patna University.

From this type educational achievement he had bring the strong academic and policy background to his administrative career.
