ICC Appoints Sanjog Gupta as Chief Executive Officer
On July 7, 2025, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced Sanjog Gupta as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). He replaces Geoff Allardice, who stepped down earlier this year. Gupta’s experience in sports broadcasting and leadership in the media industry is seen as a major boost for the future of world cricket.
The ICC began searching for a new CEO in March 2025, launching a global recruitment process. More than 2,500 people from 25 countries applied. The selection committee included leaders from India (BCCI), Sri Lanka (SLC), England (ECB), and ICC Deputy Chair Imran Khwaja. They shortlisted 12 candidates, and after several rounds of review, Gupta was unanimously chosen. The final decision was approved by ICC Chairman Jay Shah and the ICC Board.
Jay Shah said that Gupta brings “extensive experience in sports strategy” and will help grow cricket globally. Shah also said Gupta’s understanding of sports fans, technology, and global trends will help cricket become more popular in new countries and possibly become a regular sport in the Olympics.
In response, Sanjog Gupta said it is a “privilege” to lead the ICC and noted that this is a very exciting time for cricket, with big events, growing fan interest, and the inclusion of cricket in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. He also pointed to the rise of women’s cricket and new digital tools as big opportunities.
Gupta started as a journalist and joined Star India in 2010. Over the years, he held key roles in sports broadcasting, including as Head of Sports at Disney & Star India.
In November 2024, he became CEO of JioStar Sports, after the merger of Viacom18 and Disney Star. He helped grow major sports properties like the IPL, ICC events, Pro Kabaddi League (PKL), and Indian Super League (ISL). Gupta is known for using creative ideas, promoting women’s sports, and leading digital-first coverage.
