ICGS Akshay Commissioned into Bharatiya Tatrakshak Fleet

India have strengthened the maritime security with commissioning of the ICGS Akshay, it is a new-generation Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV), into the Bharatiya Tatrakshak (Indian Coast Guard) fleet. It was commissioned on 27th June, 2026 at the Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) in Goa and this vessel reflects the India’s growing focus on the indigenous defence manufacturing under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. It is designed for the coastal surveillance, maritime law enforcement, search and rescue and environmental protection.

What Is ICGS Akshay?

ICGS Akshay is a new-generation Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) built for the Bharatiya Tatrakshak to perform the wide range of coastal and offshore security missions.

The vessel derives its name from the Sanskrit word “Akshay,” which means “Indestructible.” The name symbolises the strength, resilience, endurance and the unwavering commitment of the Coast Guard towards to protecting India’s maritime interests.

As a modern patrol vessel, Akshay has been developed to respond quickly to security challenges while ensuring the safe, secure and clean seas.

Commissioning Ceremony Held at Goa Shipyard Limited

The vessel was commissioned at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), Goa, on 27th June, 2026.

The commissioning ceremony was led by the Smt. Parama Sen, Additional Secretary (Personnel), Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance.

Several senior officials has also attended the event, including the,

  • Inspector General Bhisham Sharma, Commander, Coast Guard Region (West)
  • Inspector General Jyotindra Singh, Deputy Director General (HRD)
  • Senior representatives from the Central and State Governments
  • Officials from Goa Shipyard Limited

ICGS Akshay has been designed as a versatile Fast Patrol Vessel which is capable of undertaking multiple operational roles.

  • Assistance to vessels and mariners in distress
  • Enhanced surveillance across the India’s maritime zones

These capabilities will enable the Coast Guard to respond rapidly to emergencies while maintaining the continuous monitoring of India’s coastline.

Operational Role in India’s Maritime Security

As India possesses a coastline of over 7,500 kilometres, numerous ports, offshore installations and an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) which covers more than 2 million square kilometres.

To protecting this vast maritime area requires modern patrol vessels capable of operating efficiently in diverse conditions.

ICGS Akshay will strengthen the Coast Guard’s ability to,
