In Which State is Betla National Park Located?

India is home to many national parks that help protect animals, forests and natural beauty. These parks are found in different states and are known for their wildlife, greenery and peaceful surroundings. Each park has something special to offer – some have tigers, other have waterfalls or historic sites. In this article, we will learn about one such national park and where it is located?

Location of Betla National Park

Betla National Park is located in the Indian state of Jharkhand, mainly in the Latehar and Palamu districts. It covers an area of about 226 square kilometers and is part of the Palamu Tiger Reserve. The park is around 25 km from Medininagar and about 170 km from Ranchi, the state capital.

Part of Tiger Reserve

Betla was one of the first peaks in India to be included in Project Tiger back in 1974. It officially became a national park in 1986. Project Tiger is a special program by the government to protect endangered tigers.

What does ”Betla” Mean?

The name ”Betla” is actually an acronym. It stands for:

  • Bison
  • Elephant
  • Tiger
  • Leopard
  • Axis deer

These are the main animals that can be seen in the park.

Forests and Plants

The park is full of sal trees, bamboo and even medicinal plants. River like the North Koel and its smaller branches flow through the park, creating grassy meadows that support many animals.

Wild Animals in the Park

Betla National Park has many wild animals such as:

  • Tigers, leopards, elephants, gaurs (Indian bison)
  • Deer like sambar, chital, muntjac and four-horned antelope
  • Bears, wolves, jackals, hyenas and wild boars
  • Monkeys, Indian giant squirrels, porcupines and mongoose

It also has over 60 species of birds, including:

  • Peacocks, hornbills, owls, partridges and jungle fowls

Historical Site, Palamu Fort

Inside the park, you can visit the old Palamu Fort, built in the 17th century by the Chero Kings. It is a great place for history lovers and adds to the park’s charm.
