Location of Ghatigaon Wildlife Sanctuary

Ghatigaon Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected forest area located in Ghatigaon, in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. It lies to the west of Gwalior city and covers an area of about 511 square kilometers. The sanctuary also includes part of the Tigra Dam and its reservoir.

Establishment of Ghatigaon Wildlife Sanctuary

Ghatigaon Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1981. Its main purpose was to protect the habitat of the great Indian desert, a rare and endangered bird species.

Animals in the Sanctuary

The sanctuary is home to many animals and birds. Some of the main wildlife includes:

  • Great Indian Bustard
  • Blackbuck
  • Chital
  • Wild Boar
  • Striped Hyena

Forest Type and Trees

The forest in this area is called Khathiar-Gir dry deciduous forest. It has how shrubs and small trees. Common tree species are:

  • Khairl
  • Tendu
  • Reonjha (Vachellia leucophloea)

There are also many types of grasses and bushes like Zizyphus and Erasgrotis.
