When was It Declared a National Park?

• It was first declared a Reserve Forest by the Travancore Government in 1897.
• Later, on 21 November 2003, it was officially notified as a National Park to protect its wildlife and biodiversity.
• In 2008, the Kerala state government gave it National Park status considering its importance as an elephant corridor.
• The central government also marked an Eco-Sensitive Zone of up to 1 km around it.

Meaning of the Name

The name Mathikettan comes from a Tamil phrase meaning  ”one who losses his mind.” Local people say that anyone entering deep into the park can get confused and lose their way.

• The park is an important elephant corridor.
• Elephants often move through it from the Munnar forest areas, but they can get trapped due to human activities nearby.

There are two main viewing points in the park:

• Njandaar Mettu
• Uchilukuth Mettu

From these spots, visitors can even see parts of Tamil Nadu.
