In Which State is Sitanadi Wildlife Sanctuary Located?

Location of Sitanadi Wildlife Sanctuary

The Sitanadi Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Dhamtari district of Chhattisgarh, India. It was started in the year 1974 under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. The sanctuary covers a large area of around 556 square kilometers, making it one of the major wildlife areas in central India.

Geography of Sitanadi Wildlife Sanctuary

This sanctuary is named after the Sitanadi River, which begins in this forest and later joins the Mahanadi River near a place called Deokhut. The land in the sanctuary is not flat and has different heights, from 327 meters to 736 meters above sea level. The area is full of green trees and thick forests.

Plants and Trees of this Sanctuary

The forest in Sitanadi Wildlife Sanctuary has a mix of many trees. Among them, Teak and Bamboo are the most common. These trees provide shelter and food to many animals and birds. The green cover also keeps the area cool and full of life throughout the year.

Fauna of Sitanadi Wildlife Sanctuary

This sanctuary is home to a wide variety of animals. Some of the important animals found here are:

  • Tigers and leopards
  • Sloth Bears, Hyenas and Jackals
  • Flying Squirrels, Jungle Cats and Monkeys
  • Chinkara, Black Buds, Nilgai and Barking Dear
  • Bison, Gaur, Wild Dogs and Wild Boars
  • Cobra, Python and many other reptiles

It is also home to unique animals like Four-horned Antelopes and Muntjacs.

Bird Life of this Sanctuary

The sanctuary is a perfect place for bird lovers. More than 175 species of birds live here or visit during different seasons. The songs and colors of birds make the forest lively and exciting for visitors.
