Long ago, the forests of Valmikinagar were owned by local royal families – Bettiah Raj and Ramanagar Raj.

  • In 1978, the area was declared a wildlife sanctuary.
  • In 1990, it became a National Park.
  • It is also the 17th Tiger Reserve of India.

Geography and Landscape of the Valmiki National Park

The park is located at the foothills of the Himalayas, along the Gandak River. It is surrounded by:

  • Nepal’s Chitwan National Park (north)
  • Uttar Pradesh (west)

The land is made up of:

  • Hills, forests, valleys and grasslands
  • Rivers, swamps and streams
  • Special regions called bhabar and terai, found near the Himalayan foothills.

The Gandak River flows along the western edge and meets other rivers at a holy place called Triveni.

Forests and Plants in the Park

Valmiki National Park has many types of forests like:

  • Sal forests
  • Mixed deciduous forests
  • Grasslands
  • Swamp forests

Important plants and trees include:

  • Sal, Bahera, Simal, Harra and Chir Pine
  • Medicinal plants like Amla, Satawar and Piper

There are also many types of grasses, climbers and wetland plants.

Valmiki National Park is important because it protects many wild animals, including tigers, elephants and rare birds. It is Bihar’s only national park and helps save nature and forests.
