The Bombay High Court is one of the oldest and most important courts in India. Established during the British period, it was created to provide a strong and organised legal system. Over time, it has become a major centre for justice, legal education, and governance in western India. The court is also famous for its beautiful heritage building and historical significance.
The Bombay High Court officially started functioning on 14 August 1862. It was set up under the Indian High Courts Act, 1861, replacing the earlier Supreme Court of Bombay. Along with the Calcutta and Madras High Courts, it formed the first structured High Court system in India.
The High Court was created by the British to manage civil, criminal, and revenue matters under a single authority. This helped improve the judicial system in the Bombay Presidency. The court also became a place where important political and nationalist cases were heard during India’s struggle for freedom.
The Bombay High Court has authority over the state of Maharashtra, Goa, and the Union Territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. Its main seat is in Mumbai, and it has additional benches in Nagpur, Aurangabad, and Panaji (Goa). This allows the court to handle cases from a wide region efficiently.
The court building is a famous example of Gothic Revival architecture. Made of stone, it has large court halls, beautiful arches, and historic design elements. The structure is not only a functioning court but also a protected heritage site, attracting visitors and architecture enthusiasts.
The Bombay High Court has delivered many important decisions in areas like constitutional law, civil rights, labour laws, and social justice. It continues to play a major role in shaping legal practice and protecting citizens’ rights in India.
