Inauguration of Kochrab Ashram and Launch of Gandhi Ashram Memorial Master Plan by PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Sabarmati Ashram to inaugurate Kochrab Ashram and launch the Master Plan of the Gandhi Ashram Memorial. This significant event commemorated Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy and contributions to India’s freedom struggle.

Kochrab Ashram

  • Established by Gandhi on May 25, 1915, upon his return from South Africa.
  • It was Gandhi’s first Ashram in India, emphasizing experiments in farming, cow breeding, Khadi, and constructive activities.
  • Originally situated on barren land near the Sabarmati River, the Ashram was later relocated for practical and symbolic reasons.
  • The relocation was influenced by the myth of Dadhichi Rishi and Gandhi’s strategic placement between a jail and a crematorium.

Sabarmati Ashram

  • Originally named Satyagraha Ashram, it became a symbol of India’s struggle for independence.
  • Gandhi resided here from 1917 to 1930, promoting non-violence and self-reliance.
  • The Ashram served as the starting point for the historic Dandi March on March 12, 1930, protesting the British Salt Law.
  • Despite government pressure, Gandhi refused to forfeit the Ashram, disbanding it only in 1933 after India’s independence seemed assured.
