India Achieves Near-Universal Banking Coverage with 99.92% of Inhabited Villages Served

India has achieved a magnificent advancement with 99.92% of its inhabited villages having a bank branch of some sort within 5km. As per the data made available by the Ministry of Finance on August 3, 2026, out of the 6,01,328 inhabited villages, 6,00,868 villages are now being served by either branches of banks, Business Correspondents, or India Post Payments Bank. The significant success has been made possible due to the existence of robust banking network and initiatives like Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana owing to which more and more countries are becoming financially inclusive, thereby reaching out to the remote and rural parts of India.

India Reaches 99.92% Banking Coverage

Government has made sure that all the villages inhabited have been provided with banking services within the limit of five kilometers.

As per Jan Dhan Darshak App,

  • Total number of inhabited villages 601328
  • Number of villages with banking
  • Total Coverage attained: 99.92%

Provision of Banking services is done through,

  • Banks
  • Business Correspondent
  • Indian Postal Payments Bank

Solid Banking Infrastructure Fostering Financial Inclusion

With a wide bank coverage across India, the country has good financial infrastructure.

As of July 17, 2026,

  • 1.81 lakh+ bank branches
  • 17.36 lakh Business Correspondents (BCs)
  • 1.65 lakh India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) branches

Business Correspondents play a significant role in providing banking services to towns and villages where establishing an entire bank branch is not economically feasible.

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana is still Expanding

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana is one of the largest schemes of financial inclusion in India.

As of July 17, 2026

  • Total PMJDY accounts = 58.77 crore
  • Total PMJDY deposits = ₹3,12,414 crore

With this scheme, many Indians now have access to bank services, direct benefit transfers, and insurance and pension services by being part of the formal economy.

Government Initiatives to Enhance Rural Banking

In order to improve access to banking in the country, the Government and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have initiated a number of steps.

Liberalized Branch Expansion

Commercial banks, small finance banks, payments banks, regional rural banks, and local area banks can now open their branches anyplace in the country without obtaining prior approval from RBI provided that at least 25% of the branches are opened in an unbanked rural area.

Continuous Monitoring

The opening of banking outlets is supervised by the State Level Bankers’ Committees (SLBCs) and the Union Territory Level Bankers’ Committees (UTLBCs).

These organizations work with state governments and banks to find unbanked areas and improve the accessibility of banking services in these areas.
