India Adds Highest Ever Wind Power Capacity in FY2025-26

Historic milestone was achieved by India in clean energy by adding the record 6.05 GW of wind power capacity in FY 2025-26. And with this it marks the highest ever annual production ever. This growth reflects the 46% rise compared to the previous year and it signals the strong momentum in the renewable energy sector. With this India’s total installed wind energy capacity has crossed the 56 GW and reinforcing the position as a global leader in sustainable energy and bring country closer to the sustainable target towards 2030.

Record-Breaking Wind Energy Growth in 2025-26

India’s wind energy sector have witnessed the extraordinary surge in FY 2025-26 and it has already surpassed the earlier peak of 5.5 GW which was recorded in 2016-17. The addition of 6.05 GW capacity highlights the renewed push toward green energy expansion.

This are not just numbers but it reflects the structural transformation how renewable energy projects are planned and executed in India.

Key Highlights

  • Total 6.05 GW wind capacity added in FY 2025-26
  • Which is 46% increase compared to FY 2024-25
  • The total installed wind capacity in country crosses 56 GW
  • Shows the strong progress toward 500 GW non-fossil fuel target by 2030

What Is Driving This Rapid Growth in Wind Energy?

The sharp rise in wind energy capacity is the result of the multiple coordinated efforts by the government and industry.

Government initiatives such as the concessional customs duty on turbine components and also the waiver of Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) charges till 2028 have boosted the confidence of investor. With the focus on infrastructure like better grid connectivity and transmission readiness have enabled the faster integration of the renewable energy into the national grid.

Also the transparent bidding systems have led to the cost-effective wind energy tariffs and making wind power more attractive. This growth of wind-solar hybrid projects is improving the efficiency and ensuring the round-the-clock power supply.

Top Contributing States in Wind Energy Expansion

In India several states played the crucial role in to achieving this milestone.

Top 3 states are,

  1. Gujarat
  2. Karnataka
  3. Maharashtra

These states have emerged as the key drivers of India’s wind energy revolution.

India’s Position in Global Wind Energy

India is now among the top wind energy producers worldwide because of the efforts in the last couple of decades with consistent growth and policy backing.

The country’s wind energy journey began in the early 1990s and today it boasts

  • The robust manufacturing ecosystem.
  • Also the strong institutional support from the National Institute of Wind Energy
  • Increasing private sector participation
