India and Singapore Deepen Defence and Trade Ties

India and Singapore have reaffirmed their strategic partnership by exploring deeper defence cooperation, enhanced technology collaboration, and a renewed focus on balanced trade relations, during the official visit of Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong to India. The visit, which marks 60 years of diplomatic ties, underscores the importance both nations place on strengthening their political, economic, and defence alignment in the Indo-Pacific region.

Defence and Technology: A New Phase of Strategic Cooperation

At the heart of the bilateral discussions was a commitment to explore co-development and co-production of defence technologies. According to MEA Secretary (East) P. Kumaran, while defence cooperation is still “a work in progress,” both countries have acknowledged the importance of collaborative innovation in defence manufacturing and shared technological outputs.

Key areas under discussion include,

  • Co-development and co-production of defence systems
  • Joint research in military technologies
  • Expanded training and service-level engagements
  • Possible frameworks for output sharing and strategic interoperability

Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Lawrence Wong agreed to increase momentum in military exchanges, including tri-service engagements, training, and future technology linkages.

Trade Dialogue: Reviewing AITIGA and CECA

Trade relations also featured prominently in the talks, especially in light of India’s concerns over the rising trade deficit with ASEAN countries since the signing of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA).

Secretary Kumaran shared that,

  • Singapore has agreed to support India in communicating its position to ASEAN partners
  • Both sides are keen to revise the agreement to create a more balanced trade scenario
  • The India-Singapore Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) is also up for review
  • India is pushing for adjustments in tariff structures and non-tariff barriers to ensure mutual benefits, especially for its export-oriented sectors.

Diplomatic and Cultural Significance of the Visit

PM Wong’s visit is his first official trip to India, and comes shortly after PM Modi’s 2024 visit to Singapore. It coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations, adding ceremonial weight to the bilateral talks.

Highlights of the visit,

  • PM Wong paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat
  • Accompanied by a high-level delegation of Cabinet Ministers and senior officials
  • Focus on cultural ties, people-to-people engagement, and educational exchanges
  • Recognition of Singapore’s role in India’s Act East policy and ASEAN outreach
  • The visit has set the stage for a strategic roadmap spanning defence, economics, culture, and regional diplomacy.

Trade and Investment: A Growing Partnership

The economic relationship between the two nations has grown significantly,

  • Bilateral trade increased from USD 6.7 billion in 2004–05 to USD 35 billion in 2024–25
  • Singapore remains one of the top foreign investors in India
  • Discussions included boosting investment flows and creating innovation-friendly regulatory environments
  • Both leaders reiterated the importance of private sector engagement and startup collaboration, especially in areas like fintech, clean energy, AI, and logistics.
