India and Sri Lanka Conduct IN–SLN DIVEX 2026 to Strengthen Maritime Cooperation
The India and Sri Lanka successfully conducted the fourth edition of the bilateral diving exercise IN–SLN DIVEX 2026 in the Colombo from April 21 to 28. This exercise has featured the participation from the Indian Navy which includes the specialized vessel INS Nireekshak, along with the Sri Lankan Navy divers. This initiative highlights the growing cooperation, improved interoperability and a shared commitment to ensure the peace and stability in the Indian Ocean Region.
This exercise have focused on to the advanced underwater operations which is showcasing the technical capabilities and coordination of the both navies.
The major highlight was the successful execution of the deep-sea diving operations beyond 55 metres target and demonstrated the high levels of skill and preparedness.
The divers also carried out the mixed gas diving drills which are important for the complex underwater missions.
The exercise has included the operations near historic World War-era wrecks such as the SS Worcester and SS Perseus and adding the both technical and historical significance to the drills.
IN-SLN DIVEX is designed to improve the interoperability between naval forces of this country and enables them to operate seamlessly during the joint missions.
Also this is particularly important in the Indian Ocean Region which is the key global trade route and strategically sensitive area.
The exercise will strengthens the joint operational readiness, the coordination in emergency situations and areas of the maritime domain awareness.
This type of such collaboration will ensures the better preparedness to handle the natural disasters, maritime accidents and the security challenges.
This exercise has also highlighted the strong defense ties between the two countries.
The Rear Admiral SJ Kumara visited the INS Nireekshak and appreciated the India’s contribution to training Sri Lankan divers.
The exchange of the expertise showcases the trust in the level of military diplomacy.
This exercise was not limited to the operational activities. The several initiatives were also organized to strengthen the interpersonal bonds between the two navies.
Also the joint activities included the beach clean-up drive at Galle Face, friendly sports events and the yoga sessions.
These engagements have fostered the mutual respect and also strengthened cultural connections which are important for long-term cooperation.
India has also extended the humanitarian assistance by handing over BHISM cubes under the Aarogya Maitri initiative.
These portable medical units are designed to enhance the disaster response and healthcare support.
This move will highlights the India’s role as the responsible regional partner and it contributing not only to security but also to the humanitarian efforts.
