India Assumes Chair of Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre (ADPC)
India has taken over the Chair of the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre (ADPC) for the year 2024-25, succeeding China. This transition was formalized on July 25, 2024, in Bangkok, Thailand. The appointment underscores India’s growing global and regional leadership in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Under Prime Minister Modi, India has emerged as a key player in disaster risk reduction, notably through the establishment of the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI). The country’s leadership in ADPC reflects its commitment to advancing DRR and building climate resilience in the Asia-Pacific region.
ADPC is an autonomous international organization focused on disaster risk reduction and climate resilience in Asia and the Pacific. It was founded by India and eight neighboring countries: Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.
Shri Rajendra Singh, Member and Head of Department of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), has officially assumed the role of Chair for 2024-25. India also presided over the 5th Board of Trustee (BoT) meeting of ADPC, which was held on July 25, 2024.
