India Expands Overseas Port Operations: Targeting Mongla Port in Bangladesh
In a strategic move to counter China’s growing influence in the region, India sets its sights on managing the Mongla Port in Bangladesh. Following the successes of Chabahar in Iran and Sittwe in Myanmar, India aims to further strengthen its commercial and security interests by expanding its overseas port operations.
India’s interest in operating the Mongla Port alongside its endeavors at Chabahar and Sittwe marks a deliberate effort to counterbalance China’s strategic presence in the region. With China also eyeing the port’s operations, India’s move signifies its proactive stance in securing vital maritime routes.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to discuss India’s interest in managing the Mongla Port with Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during their upcoming meetings. This discussion underscores the significance of the port’s management in bilateral relations and regional geopolitics.
India Ports Global Ltd (IPGL) has emerged as the preferred entity for India’s international port operations, with plans to manage the Mongla Port. Negotiations are underway, and IPGL has already conducted assessments at the port. The Mongla Port Authority will evaluate the proposal, considering its profitability and potential benefits for both countries.
The strategic importance of Mongla Port lies in its role in enhancing regional connectivity. India already has transshipment access to both Chittagong and Mongla ports, facilitating the transportation of cargo to northeastern states. With plans to construct additional jetties, Mongla Port aims to handle increased cargo volume, further bolstering regional trade dynamics.
